Storage units...

I never wanted to do this but I kinda had to...My spare parts were taking up too much space. While a part of me says if they need a storage unit I might as well sell my parts but another part of me thinks that having spare stuff is a good thing as one day parts will be harder to come by...I can use these spares for designs to future parts or simpler things like reusing my stock knuckles one day if I go a different suspension route, or reusing my stock leaves for a spring over...Hopefully one day I can pull this stuff out and put it in my own garage made just for storing hummer parts

Where do other hummer hoarders keep their stuff?

Well you should carry the halfshaft with you on the trail lol, but other wise i would say clear a shelving unit in the garage and pile the stuff on.

I have other halfshafts and a tie rod already in the back of the H3 I gotta find that spare ball joint too...

The plan is to clear this stuff out so I can find some room for more fab stuff. A work table would be a good start

I was at a friends today who lives at and manages a storage place here. 4 x6 is 45 month, 5 x8 is 55. Dang figure that on a year and it adds up.
My loft above the shop has H3 parts scattered all over and so is an attached storage at the back of the shop I walled off. This has to last me as I don't want anything else.
It may get interesting in later years.

I would bet SoCal prices would be even higher for storage units. The way I look at it: are the parts that you're storing worth paying $600-$1200 per year to store? Or a few thousand dollars if you store for multiple years? I'd find a way to store them in my garage or even a friend's garage.

BTW, I will save you some storage room and take that crossmember off of your hands. :wink:

I've been uneasy about it. Hopefully when I clean out the garage, reorganize and throw out other stuff out I can put the parts back in the garage.

Hunner, im surprised those prices are comparable to over here.

Alex, craig already called dibs on it. I think he's using this to rebuild it and take out his old one...it may make it out to dwaynes shop.

I had 3 storage rooms at one time. When I got my shop I am down to one now. It is amazing how much room spare T cases, brushguards, roof racks, wheels and tires etc can take up. I still have a decent size pile of stuff at Tustin that I need to pick up one day.

I think its great to have a pile of spares. I like the t case idea. I plan to buy a 4:1 and keep my 2.64:1 as a spare. If anyone ever blows one up in moab I can ship it out so they aren't stranded.

I got a large unit right now that's half empty, around 10x10 or 10x15 or soemthing. Got 6-7 wheels and tires in there, misc parts, a new Transfer case in the chest and a few boxes off misc home items.

I'm thinking of downsizing the unit, sell/use everything in boxes, sell any unneeded parts, and remove the tires off the wheels and keep the 17" alloy rims in smaller boxes and sell/give away the tires.

I keep HUMMER stuff in the attic, on shelves in the garage, on the workbench, dedicated museum room in the basement, under the bed (this one gets my wife the most), in the closet, in the hatch of my wifes car (which normally sits in the garage, not driven much).
I also store alot of stuff on Craigslist and E Bay--this is the least secure as I go back and visit several times a day, but sometimes my stuff is missing. What I mean here is I bookmark everything interesting and keep an eye on prices and how long it takes to sell. This is also the most cost effective method and takes up the least amount of room.
I could probably also include Fed Ex and USPS as a place to store stuff as it's not uncommon to have things somewhere in transit most of the time. I think Zach is on this plan as well, alot of our stuff goes coast to coast so it's on a plane or truck somewhere most of the time.

H1's might be slightly different in that some parts are no longer made an are almost impossible to replace. I have some spare seats, interior doghouses, dash clusters, etc that you just don't see anymore. Also depending on what the military is doing some parts get hard to get for periods of time. Not sure the the H2 and H3s won't soon be in the same position.

I've got a storage unit. Comes in pretty handy with the exception of I have too much stuff and keep adding to it. One can never have enough parts, right?

Can't have too many spares. I have about 650 Sf of storage rooms that are pretty much all Hummer parts.

USPS--the best storage solution---unless they lose your junk. There's a set of brand new LE steps lost in one of their warehouses somewhere, damn them!

Not more bling? You can only have so much Twinmill. And USPS storage is only temporary then you have to put it back in and send it somewhere else. Still waiting for my prius hamster turbo kit aka LE steps lol

It's a good system I've got going though--with you I send black stuff, you send chrome stuff. In this case I'm sending black stuff and getting green stuff!
As for the Prius Hamster thing, I'm feeling pretty confident that because I wrote that, somebody got their panties in a wad and that was one package that would never reach it's destination. I blame the tree huggers on your side of the country
