What should I replace the H3 with?

i like land rovers, but not for a DD. I sold my 03 disco to buy the H3. It was a fun truck, awesome off road, really nice on the inside, and kind of different. But everything you hear about them being unreliable is true. In the 8 months that I had it, it was in the shop 4 times, and they weren't cheap fixes. I finally sold it because the shop wanted nearly $2000 to fix the leaking steering gear, and on top of that it had developed a really serious oil leak. besides, i've wanted an H3 since they came out with the alpha. I should have bought that to begin with... oh well.

If I was going to get something else, I'd look at the new dodge rams. those are rad.

Another problem with LR is getting service. How many dealers across the country? And not sure if Tata motors, their owners, have done anything to make them better.

An H2 is a great choice. I must agree with the comments on the LR3 .I have two guy's that work for me and they seem to take turns picking each other up from the service center. I know of several H2's with a couple of hundred thousand miles on them with moderate offroadingbut proper maintenancce and no other issues. You cannot beat the comfort of an H3. They also handle fantastic for what the percieved size is. Try one you will love it.

The H2 is just too BIG for us. If I have to sell the H3,I'm leaning towards a Jeep GC with a HEMI or Diesel. Maybe a Commander.

If you get a diesel Jeep, make damn sure it has the Mercedes engine, and NOT the VM engine. The VM engine is an Italian made engine that's VERY unreliable. Unfortunately about 80% of the diesel Jeeps are VM engines. The Mercedes engine is top notch and very reliable. Since they are rare you may end up paying a pretty penny. If someone tries to fool you saying it has a Detroit Diesel engine, they are essentially saying its a VM engine. VM bought Detroit Diesel, but nothing was ever changed on the engine.

I think the Alpha can tow more than 6000 LBs. The other day I ended up towing a fellow H3 member for a long distance, on sometimes steep grades on sand. Didnt have any problems doing that in second gear running 35s. Although this was a one off event (friends rig broke down practically in the middle of no where) but an Alpha is worth it.

The GC's I saw with a diesel have the 3.0 CRD Mercedes engine.

If, If, if........I am forced to sell the H3 most likely a 5.7 HEMI V8 will be the best gas tow engine in a Jeep Commander or GC. They are much easier to find close to me. H3 Alpha's are out of my price range I just can't have a huge car payment and work on my debt reduction plan.

I'm throwing in my vote for the H2 - I love mine and will be more than adequate to tow the trailer you describe.

The H2 is the same as any other large SUV that you should be looking at to tow that trailer.

Just remember, when looking to make sure the vehicle can not only handle the tow weight, but it can also handle the tongue carrying weight or the weight distribution weight, max payload, max axle weight, etc. These are all considerations to make before purchasing any tow vehicle if you already have the trailer picked out.

Like I noted earlier an Alpha could pull more than 6K, but not safely and not good for the engine/trans/axles.

But my opinion has always been, get what YOU WANT! And good luck.

No, it would melt down in a horrific volcanic manner from the sheer amount of heat an engine can generate while towing.

Ok, so I heard you mention Commander a few times, my son just brought home a commander with all the options, but still a 3.7 and only quadre trac1. As far as comfort and ride, great, don't know about towing. The good thing is, At night with a quick glance, it looks like a H3.

To tow what? Tow ratings are more than just engine HP, they involve trans, axles and final gear ratio. Suspension, brakes, hitch tongue weight, etc. Adding some HP to the 3.7L would conceivably boost your towing capability since all other components are the same as the Alpha (except for final drive ratio).

This past weekend I needed to move my travel trailer (~7000 lbs) from one spot to another across the campground. Nothing far, nothing to tough and only at 5-10 mph. Did I use my H3?


NO!!!!!!!

The H3 rear end (shocks, springs etc...) is not designed to handle the tongue weight.

The owner of the campground used his Dodge Ram pickup. I am not risking screwing up the suspension.
But that is just me. What do I know? I have been towing that travel trailer around Colorado since 2001.

I have a Tahoe which is the tow vehicle. We leave the TT at the campground and travel there on the weekends. We take the H3 because the Tahoe is too wide for the trails and we don't want to drive two vehicles to the CG.

Stay away for range rover, they are simply not made the same any more unless u r going with the 87 to 95 range rover classic LWB or SWB. Cherokee are great and u should give it a look, price is reasonable and reliable but make sure u get the high end model. My brother has owned his 1988 XJ his since 1999 400,000 going strong. you should also look at the Tahoe z71

I know I'll get hell for this but I loved my 2007 rangerover sport...only reason I traded it in was I was afraid to scratch it and we started building H3 parts

Last LR3 that was running with me broke air syspension on easy trail had to be towed to Fresno from Sierras ( nearest dealership) 2/3 days later replaced all 4 hight sensors.
he had oversized tires and has rubbing inside fender wells.
