Wheel oxidation

Anyone know how to fix this?

Is this set of wheels useable or would the tires have leaks all the time?

Try to grind it down?

Bread sealer?

Or total junk?

wow, that looks pretty bad. I'm not sure that cleaning it will be enough honestly. That corrosion looks more like an electrochemical or galvanic reaction than the usual corrosion aluminum sees. Is it just the one side of the rims that is like that? Do you live by the ocean?

That's the worst one. The spare wheel doesn't have any visible. The other 3 have the same stuff but only in like 8 inch lengths in certain areas.

I had an issue with my back left tire very slowly leaking. After I fill it back up, the TPM system would go off after a week. Figured it was a small nail or screw or something. Took it to a reputable tire shop and they showed me what looks like your wheels. They said they'd try grinding it and cleaning but no guarantees, and didn't even charge me for it. That was 3 weeks ago and haven't had any leaks since. It's worth a shot to have em looked at by the pro's

I took it to a tire place and he said $45 a wheel to put bead sealer on and grind that stuff off... And no guarantees.

Seen this a lot on Lexus and Mercedes rims. Grind it off, bead sealer and hope for the best. Usually will hold it for a while.

Keep your eyes on Craigslist. I've seen full sets of H3 wheels as low as $75.

Eventually that will work it's way out under the chrome and the chrome will start peeling. Anything you do now is only prolonging the inevitable.

Some wheel restorers can fix nicks and gouges in aluminum wheels. I wonder if they could return that to original. I had one of those guys "fix" a couple of wheels on one of the Ferraris that I had. Wasn't that bad, maybe $85/wheel. Couldn't tell it had ever been damaged. Mine was curb rash. Given how cheap H3 wheels are buying a used set probably makes sense but if you have expensive aftermarket wheels the repair route might make sense.

At a shop they are gonna put them on and grind that stuff off for $65. Fingers crossed for no leaks...

So I didn't use that really bad one, the tire guy used a wire wheel to grind some of that stuff down.. He said he was gonna put a little bead sealer on it as well but I didn't see him do that so idk if he really did.

My original wheels look great compared to these in the oxidation department...

But I really like the look of these compared to the originals.
