Now with the added capability of the H3 I am quite happy with the setup. As I start to tackle tougher trails I desperately needed something to pull my sorry ass out in case I get stuck. In the past a strap did fine but on these tougher trails it can be much more difficult to line someone up to get a pull. So a winch is needed, I went with the smittybilt "****tybilt" xrc10. Everyone calls them ****tybilt but I have seen over 5 different xrc8s and xrc10s on my brothers jeep and my friends rigs and yet to see one fail. They are cheap and get abused, from rollover recoveries to bizarre winch pulls they always do well.
the biggest thing that pisses me off is that I added weight to my rig. Is it necessary weight? I would say yea as a winch can be useful offroad, but weight is weight and we dont need anymore of it. I started out without a regard to weight, I was a new guy to wheeling and I am learning rather quickly about all sorts of things so what can I do? I am thinking of going with masterpull synthetic winch line. the smittybilt winch shipping weight is 94 lbs so we can say the winch is about 90 lbs. The smittybilt xrc10 comp series (that has synthetic line) shipping weight is 67 lbs so we can guess its about 64-65lbs. That is about 25lbs in weight loss, or about 30% weight loss which is fantastic! Why did I go with the comp series right away? Well I didnt want to dish out the extra cash right away. Now that school is out, I will be picking up extra hrs at work and can hopefully make the purchase of synthetic soon.
What else will I change? I plan to go to alpha torsion bars or replace the stock ones with the same ones, but I am leaning towards the alpha ones due to the added weight. As we all know suspension wears out with age and at 110k miles, with tons of abuse I think they are gone. So with the addition to new shocks and alpha bars the ride quality will be improved.
At first I was thinking about a full bumper but I am glad I went this route, its lighter and after using the brushguard to pivot myself around a rock I was thrilled to see how much it helped.
Ignore those leaks on the ground, its not me, its my brothers jeep. He should of listened to me when I told him to get an oil pan skid.
I will come up with a solution for the license plate but for now its just ziptied. I could technically leave it off the front but that plate is so mangled I want it on.
my girlfriend got me the panavise mount and some superwinch tree straps for winching.
So, with all that said I am happy with the new additions but a regear and a PCM tune can really be used right now with added weight of the winch, I can feel it.
If you really really want to have minimal weight gain you can get the warn 9.0rc winch that thing is about 54 lbs and the racers use them but with a pricetag of 3 smittybilt 10k winches I would never spend that much. Lastly, get the warranty through 4WP, for about 50 bucks you get a 3yr warranty no questions asked. Dont go through smittybilt, you bring it to your local 4WP store, tell them its broken and they take the old one you get a new one.
