Hi all! I'm a new owner of a red 2008 H3 Base. Picked it up a couple weeks ago to replace my aging 1998 Dodge Neon Sport. Only other offroad capable vehicles I've owned were a 2005 Jeep Liberty Limited (which I thoroughly enjoyed) and a 1990 something Ford Ranger, which aside from the cracking heads and transmission that liked to have the selector pop out from between the forks while in 2nd gear, was a pretty good vehicle as well.

I haven't done much in the way of offroading, and am not sure how much I will end up really getting into it, but I'm pretty excited at how well the H3 is setup already for offroading. I wish I could have found one with the adventure packages, but oh well, I'll be adding that stuff later on most likely.

I'm out in West Valley UT, am a Linux System Administrator for a small local company, and my call sign is KE7TYY. I have a bunch of other hobbies, so now I get to add another one to the mix.

Welcome from SoCal . Very nice ,I have the same rig as you . You will have lots of fun with it . Fist thing you need to do is crank up the torsion bars you'll get about 2.5 in of lift for free ( Max 23.5 from center of hub to fender ) and will get rid of that stink bug look . With the t-bars cranked now you can run a larger tire. Now start searching the posts for other mods and have lots fun with your new rig.

Thanks!

I've read about adjusting the torsion bars, I'll probably do that later on. I've already been reading around a bunch at the different mods people are doing and am getting some ideas. It's definitely going to go in the direction of offroading rather than mall crawler. First though I have to figure out the existing mods the previous owner did, namely whether the little box with a knob under the aftermarket radio is for a trailer braking controller or something else. All it says on it is "Remote Control" with a knob and an LED. I know he must have had an amp as there is a power feed coming off the battery into the firewall, and a pair of audio wires going to the back that are no longer hooked up to anything back there.

Next will be getting my 2M radio mounted, and a cell phone mount. We'll see what happens from there.

welcome. I used to live pretty close to you. there's some of the world's best off-roading in Utah, I hope you take advantage of it. I miss it up there.

Thanks everyone!

Oltorf, I need to find some trails nearby to try out. I know there is a ton of stuff down south, but I want to find something close by to start out on. I have enough experience and skill to know I know far to little to tackle anything serious right now, or far away. Any suggestions?

there's little moab a bit south of provo (i think), and the snakes trails - sidewinder and rattlesnake. i think there are a few more. checkout rme4x4.com they have local groups that go out all the time and they don't hate anyone that's not a jeep driver. the the BLM land that's on the west side of utah lake is ok for just driving around. rattlesnake and sidewinder are north of there but I couldn't ever really find exactly where they were.

Thanks all! I'm still really happy with it, and finally got some material to make the foldover antenna mounts I've been trying to build. Hopefully I'll have those built in the next week or two. I'll post it in my build thread when I am done.
