Another tire thread- looking to move up to "adventure" size. (Update post #25)

Title says most of it. I've decided I don't want to go any bigger than the "adventure" size, 285/75/16, mostly because of power. I'm planning on going with the TOYO A/T2's based on a ton of internet and personal reviews of the tire. But I just wanted to check in with my hummer guys to see if they had any suggestions otherwise. So anyone have any suggestions for a different move? I figure these will probably be the last tires I put on the ride, so I don't want to mess it up! TIA!

Yes, go with 315's and don't look back. You will experience little to no power loss and it will be made up 100 fold by the shear enjoyment of having 35's. nuff said.

I run 33s and experience zero power loss. My buddy runs 34.5" KO2s on the 3.7 and swears to me it feels no different.

But hey, your decision is your decision. I want 37s, but I would at LEAST go 33".

Oh man do they look good on 35's! What about the 305/70/16's. Seems like a good middle ground that people have had success with.

I'm in this same predicament right now. Currently have 265/75r16 on my Alpha and I just can't pull the trigger between 305 and 315 Nitto Mud Grapplers. Only thing holding me up is I pull a 22' toy hauler and i think the 315's might be too much, for the tranny in particular. Need to order these skins soon!

I'm thinking about getting 295 75 16 Toyo Open Country AT2s. Tread depot has them for around $800 free shipping no tax.. for 4 tires.

They are 33.4 inches so a little bigger than my factory Bridgestone 285s.

I recently contacted a guy that has the exact tires I'm thinking about getting... He said that they have great tread life and don't rub at all.

here is a pic of his H3t with the tires I'm talking about.

I asked him to take some better pics.

That's a pretty good price!Maybe my answer is 34". Haha! Have been an Interco guy for years but haven't had a lot of luck with the last two sets (Irok/Thornbird). Kind of hung up on the Mud Grapplers..

Disagree on the power loss. If this were my DD I would have a set of 285s for the street and 315s for the trail. My I5 will not cruise comfortably at 75 mph with the 315s.

I ran 295s and 305s as well before. I think the 305s are a nice size for those looking for a bigger tire.

If I did not plan to do much offroading (and be honest with the type of offroading you do because 33's will pretty much hang with everyone as long as you pick your lines) and I was going to do mostly daily driving I would stick with the 33's. I have gone back and forth between vehicles with 33's and 35's and 33's feel more peppy where the 35's (especially on the highway) feel like you are always going up an incline. There is a noticeable hit in power with the 35's, if you have the automatic you will always be in and out of OD if there are any hills or you want to keep up with traffic. Will the 35's do 75 all day on the hwy? Sure, but you had better start a severe duty oil change cycle with them if you go there.

I have the 315/75-16's Toyo MT. These are a load range E. Overkill, but I had them around. Anyway, I am very impressed at how well these squat when aired down. Unusual for a heavy duty sidewall. Handles heavy trailers very well. Highly recommend. Very expensive though.
Power loss: yeah, a little. I have the power adder reprogrammer and there is a tow setting which modifies tranny shift points. It works very well. It's also important to note that reprogramming tire size helps a lot. You may not be losing as much power as you think.

Can't make it through the day? Back up, and get a run at it!

It will boil down to how YOU drive. I am always light on the throttle so I saw/felt no noticeable change. I also had the PCM retuned and can swear I felt little difference. If you drive it like a Trophy Truck then yes, you will feel a change.

One thing to consider is that toyos are often very heavy tires vs. Other brands. I have not compared ATs but I know in the MTs are heavier, and that can measurably affect performance, MPG, braking Etc

I have Toyo AT2 and like 'em, but they're fair howlers above 40 MPH.

Mine cruises down the highway at 70-85 just fine with 35's. If I'm driving in the mountains, that's a different story, but our I5 in our heavy rigs sucks regardless of tire size in the mountains

Toyo are usually the heaviest tire in its class. Your definitely going to feel a difference with 315's. If it's just a dd then I would stick with 285

(OP) I ended up ordering the 295/75/16 Toyo AT2's. The 295's get you into their "extreme" series. Definitely caries some extra weight, but gets you some more tread and a more aggressive design. Treaddepot.com has all of the weights, I'm looking at 63.7 lbs/tire with these. I'd love to know how that compares to others. The 285/75/16 (standard adventure size, but not extreme series) is 54 lbs. I should be able to put them on the end of this week or beginning of next. I'll report back here with pictures.

That's not too bad then. The 315/75r16 Duratracs weight that much and they are one of the lightest of the "35's" due to the 2 ply sidewall.

Ended up going with the 305 Mud Grapplers and I'm glad I did! These are some heavy duty tires, at 68lbs. Way heavier duty than the E-rated Super Swamper Iroks they replaced. 100% confident 315's towing a trailer would've caused some sort of issues without regearing. They ride and drive GREAT and are surprisingly quiet on the road.

16x8 aluminum V-Tec something-or-others. Can't remember what the offset is on them, should've measured before I put them on..
Was actually looking at new wheels for a change, but all I could find were old school steel wagon wheels or ghetto fabulous deep dish wheels. So just running these for one more round of tires at least.

I'm guessing you went with the 305/70r16's? Man, that is a great looking beefy tire! I looked at the 305 for just a bit, but running the stock wheels I thought it would be a bit of a stretch because of the width of the rim.

Yep, 305/70r16. You should be able to run "12.5" width no problem with the stock wheels, a bunch of people do. If I remember correctly, stock wheels are 16x7. Recommended wheel width for "12.5" tires is 8" but 1/2" on either side of the wheel won't make THAT much of a difference. Will just squeeze the sidewall a little more, mainly just an appearance preference.

Well, here's the finished product. I ended up going with the Toyo Open Country AT2's in 295/75r16. I cannot say how impressed I am.
