Car wash just snapped of my son’s passenger side mirror. Fixin to go to war! Dumbass kid said they usually don’t cover broken plastic on cars that old.

I made my kid get the manager and GM’s phone numbers.

changed lower right Balljoint  also got a new front drive shaft from Rockauto , OEM one was also cut. Some longer branch or so must have killed both , cause something did cut through my last trip in the woods and grease was all gone.

I'm not surprised Rock Road's bent up. Before the first H3 Hummer was produced, I knew those sliders wouldn't hold up to much heavy-duty usage. It's partly why I designed mine in the first place. Rock Road and I are not playing the same game.

Anyway, I'm very confident in the design and strength of the 2nd Gen Rock Sliders I have developed. I have 7 sets in production right now and I feel like a child waiting for Christmas day.
You missed my point, The rocky roads were not enough and even going substantially beefier than that, it still wasnt enough, it took 1.5x3 .25wall steel to not bend the sliders. 3/8 wall 5052 will not hold up to the same abuse 1.5x3 .25wall will.

Painful and expensive lesson. Drive through carwashes almost always have declaimers out front and recommend folding mirrors in. I had an antenna pulled off and they pointed to the sign. H3 mirrors are $$$, good luck.

i seriously don't get why anybody uses drive-through car warshes... a 5yr-old with a hose pipe in the driveway results in the same level of cleanliness and has about the same likelihood of breaking something - except he'll do it for a cookie instead of $20!

even then, half price at the do-it-yourself bay works so much better. that's why i just bought my own pressure warsher.

New soft touch carwash 2 blocks away, 60+ hours a week at work, 5 cars to clean, unlimited supreme package for $20 a month, no kids to help, and they look great when they come out. But if your 5 year old wants a bag of cookies let me know, I'll even have my wife make fresh homemade supersize cookies. Just have to remember to tuck the mirrors in.

i'll keep that in mind...

meanwhile, my valve cover gaskets finally arrived Saturday. i got the truck back together that evening, and it's already driving better. throttle's definitely a little more responsive. i'll check the catch can in a couple days to see if anything actually changed.

Me a big sign, a dangling mirror, and warning every customer that drives up about getting their mirror snapped off. I guarantee that will cost them more than 1 mirror. I’m the nicest guy you’d ever want to meet, until I’m not.

Public sidewalk and legal parking right where they turn into the wash.

Later!

Check out the photos! Only minor tweaks and work left on the 2nd Gen Rock Slider / Rocker Panel Protection https://schwarttzy.com/product/h3-hummer-rock-sliders/

The second-generation Rock Sliders for the H3 Hummer are nearing completion. All components are assembled, except for two minor issues addressed in this video. We’re also pleased to announce that the H3T Hummer option will be available shortly. This new design offers greater versatility, with most components interchangeable between the H3 and H3T models. The step plates are currently undergoing powder coating. Thank you for your continued interest and thanks for watching!

so what the ever-loving f*** is going on with the power steering design?!?! 🤬

i did my routine oil check the other day & noticed the power steering reservoir cap was gone... not sitting there loose; not hiding in the wiring or skid plates... straight-up nowhere to be found.

1) we ain't messed with it in a while to have simply forgot to screw it back on or something (and was there a few days prior), so why would it randomly be gone?
2) called around to all the parts stores & nobody has one (thinking "what... who doesn't stock a generic GM power steering reservoir cap?")
3) looked it up to realize H3s supposedly use a freaking ONE-OFF design that everybody wants $30-69 each for a daggum $10 cap!!! you freaking kidding me?!?!

best i made out with was a dorman 99977 from rockauto @ $28 shipped. assuming it's some weird dipstick graduation markings... what possible reason would prevent them from sizing the reservoir to simply use a cap common to the rest of the trucks?

Yeah I opened my hood one day to just find the power steering cap was just chilling on top of the reservoir, not sure how long it sat there

I wish I had a driveway where I could wash my own vehicle when I wanted to.

That cap has been an issue since Day 1. I've always kept a spare with my other goodies - meaning I never lost a cap, because I kept a spare. But I did give a spare to someone else at one point.

hopefully this cap stays put!

and this ain't so much what we did to the truck - but more that the truck scared the crap out of my wife today.
she called me on her way home saying out of nowhere, it started stalling/stammering going up the mountain & would barely even do 45 in 3rd gear. this was accompanied by a flashing CEL. she limped her home, though, and after i got home from work, i checked the codes: P0305 & P0355 for #5 misfire & coil circuit malfunction.

it randomly did that same thing to me once briefly a month ago (but cleared before i got home & didn't retain any codes). i brushed it off as bad gas because it was also while going up the mountain & i'd last filled up with 87 on a flat road trip. after going down to the corner store & topping off with pure 91, we hadn't seen that again (and my wife always buys 91e10).

thoughts? are the coils maybe just starting to wear out (182k miles)?

Bad coil seems likely. You can always swap it with another cylinder but I'd probably go ahead and get a new one. It could be a wiring issue (frayed, broken) leading up to that coil too but I'd start with the coil.

yeah, that's what i thunk... but i've learned to confirm stuff before buying parts if i can.

was getting P0305 & P0355 (cylinder 5 misfire & ignition circuit), so i swapped the coil to cyl 3 (hoping the code would follow... & if anything to balance it out better)... cleared the CEL, drove it again, & still got cyl 5 codes. moved the spark plugs around this time (cleaned some oil off of #5... assuming from PCV consumption due to WOT up a mountain every day) and now it's running fine.

my guess is that i just need to run both PCV lines to the catch can, add a breather on top, and cap the intake's PCV line. we ain't got emissions tests nohow, and it ain't worth continuing to drink oil. this will only evacuate at the crankcase pressure instead of circulating fresh air through... but i'm guessing that's the root of all these problems.

rerouted the catch can yesterday... so far, so good.

it also just dawned on me after church that it'd been 50k miles since i changed the driveline fluids (not the 30k i was thinking)... so that was my afternoon. Redline GL5 75w90 in the diffs looked great & was still pretty clear. GL4 MT-90 from the trans was pretty thick & gray, though - not metallic but real worn-looking. GL4 MTL from the t-case was about the same as the transmission fluid, and it was low. seems the front output shaft seal is seeping a little.

all fluids refilled with fresh of the same + Ranger method swapped in some fresh power steering fluid.

ECP radiator finally in. Cut out and rebuilt the lower core support for clearance and a little nip tuck on the upper core support to push the new much larger radiator forward one inch similar to what 06H3 did with his. Had the FJ60 steering box rebuilt by Red Head and replaced the Borgeson U joint on the steering while I had everything apart.

oh, i almost forgot.

so about that power steering cap... i found the dipstick part of it just sitting on top of the transfer case skid plate! not sure how... guessing it bounced back up off the road or something.

Just finished the last step and got my PCM of NC remap installed. Went for a drive and couldn’t be happier with the new performance.
