I'll get to the sliders tomorrow.... I'm actually running out of other things to do; but it may be nice tomorrow and I need to do another shakedown run - so tonight's episode is titled "I wish I had a slip roll"

for the record, this won't work with the 350... weird, no? After all, the motor removed and the motor placed are both GM motors....

it's solidly in place, it will be pretty later

I figured I'd wait a day or two to update since this is a tedious and often interrupted job....
time for some chopping and welding

non slip application

non slip applied

so there's a problem with attaching to the body. It's got nice pads to limit vibration, but if I bolt solid to the body I'll have no end of trouble, and worse, squeeks

answer is rubber hose

and a bit of paint to limit rust

completed sliders

exhaust ... I seriously considered square exhaust as a nod to someone (Chad) who swore that it made a performance difference, but alas, I have an ARB airbag and it inflates a lot quicker off the exhaust - so I had to save the joke for later

to quiet it down a bit, I reduced the interior volume, we'll see if it's enough tomorrow

end of week, pretty much done pictures

and now the batteries are held in place and the cover is held down.

and I fixed my rear axle leaks! yay. Friday was an adventure, I drove more than 100 miles in the '40, but the rear has been leaking from both axle flanges. I stopped by the shop of the guy who set up the front axle and he said that it was probably bent or stretched bolts... bent or stretched grade 8, 1/2" bolts?!!! but as I know him and he knows axles, I simply bought some new bolts and lock washers.... and violin, (or viola) no leak....

I need a drain-back for the air compressor (for the oil)

and then put a few more locks in place

and more of the same - fix the pulleys (finally, I think I got it)

what a stand-up company. I called Melling this morning to try to figure out why I'm having such trouble with oil pressure. They're replacing both pumps for free. I don't think that oil pressure was the only issue with the first block (I blame the failed oil sensor), so I don't want nor think I deserve that motor replaced - but it is really nice of them to replace both pumps and want these pumps back so they can test them.

two thumbs up for Melling.

so I have like 21 pictures, but it's pointless to post all of them so you get maybe 3.... I finished the hitch

and took the doors apart - and this where there's a bunch of pictures to help me reassemble them (of course, it'd be nice to have a picture of where I put the small parts from the rear door disassembly...ugh)
but still, here

and stripped... notice the burn marks? it took every tool to get some of the screws out including heat and a grinder.... some rethreading will happen later

anyway, off to the sand blaster - but that won't be until next week... between now and then will be an oil pump install and some aircraft stripper for the fiberglass roof.

time for some fuzzy padding
also a good way to conceal wires

and dash pad (it's turned towards the driver after I removed the sticky tape... Do be sure you want it where you first stick it... just sayin')

and a bit more work I'll complete this weekend the center console needs covering

You may have mentioned this at some point in this thread....are you planning on refinishing the doors and roof as well and re-installing them?

Yes, a couple posts ago I showed the doors being disassembled so that I can have them blasted... that was the last of the stuff that needed disassembly, I'll haul them to my blaster next week.

What's funny is I may not ever use the hard top. I plan on buying this soft top

old pump, new pump

new pump with new pickup welded

ready to install

installed

tailgate straps... great idea, doesn't work

still trying to figure out what to do about lights

back to work on the tire carrier

note the load and the space saver spare?

hmmm, I built this for something else but it may work pretty well as a shelf

yes, the tire size is different.... but since the only time I'd ever use a spare is if I shredded a tire so badly that I couldn't put a tube in it or trail repair it; it'll be okay. That and I don't have a 38.5 spare and I'm not buying a new one because the tires are going to change when I wear them out.

tire carrier

I avoided doing it this way, but the reason behind it no longer exists - easy way it is

line up some holes

so some decisions to make about the carrier portion of this....

more work accomplished

I have a TRE reamer, and put it to good use for the perfect fit

so I probably will have a 33" or 35" spare (maybe 37)... there's little point to carrying a full size spare because of the way the lockers work - the spare always has to be on the front, but even if it is, unlocking that hub will still give me 3 wheel drive to get to a tire shop....

this is important because the final size isn't going to be this size nor will they be bias ply tires.... or non-locking rims...

So it's supposed to be lightning, rain, and I have no top so I needed to do a drive then 4x4 light to do a brief test
Oh yeah, and there's also this - there were some on Pirate who said "stupidest build ever" (that would be a moderator who said that) "will never finish it" "will never drive on the freeway" "will flip over because the wheelbase is too short" "he knows race cars but doesn't know 4x4s" and, one of my personal favorites "well, everyone knows how to do this" (which is an amazing admission of their own).
So thank you Bangshift, thank you Hummer4x4offroad, and even thank you everyone except Mace (but I'll forgive him if he finds me those 4.56 axles for $300) on IH8Mud. You all prove that not being the biggest jerk on the web means that you're some of the nicest people. Enjoy the 100k plus views and my thanks for hosting.
(look at the trees for angle reference)

and for those who wonder why Instant Center (IC) is important, this one climbs this hill - my Hummer can't (even though it has a longer wheelbase and full lockers too)

To the hosts, my next goal on the next build is a million views....
